Opening narration: 

Tell you the story of Christmas,

you ask. Which story? I reply,

or whose?

 

There’s the story of angels,

messengers of God, frightening,

startling, shocking –the first

thing they say

is ‘Don’t be afraid.’

 

Angels. There are angels who come alone,

a one-on-one chat with Mary, chosen

to bring the child of God to life –

‘Who me?’ – this angel had to work hard

to convince Mary she had been seen,

and was capable of doing what God asked.

 

There are angels who meet people in dreams,

assuring Joseph that God is

in this unexpected

pregnancy,

directing wise ones to Jesus

and home again safely,

and the holy family away

from danger.

 

There are angels who form great choirs,

shepherds engulfed in a mass

of sound and light, shepherds

more unseen, unthought-of people, seen

and chosen by God for this

wondrous miracle.
