A meditation
with Jeremiah 1:4–10
Do not say ‘I am only a child’ …
For the young will dream dreams and see visions
to lead the people into growing, thriving, staying alive
Children know how to play,
and if humans can play, humans can pray with me,
says Wisdom, frolicking with delight within creation.

Do not say ‘I am only a lay person’ …
The people will bring their diverse gifts
of music, administration,
of care and healing,
with paint and ink,
in movement and in stillness;
together we will weave a tapestry of beauty and strength
with our varied strands of colour and texture.

Do not say ‘I am too ill’ …
There is grace to embody, yet;
peace to seek and to share;
eyes and ears and heart to turn towards the Holy.
Do not say ‘I am too old’ …
There is wisdom you carry – pass it on;
stories to tell and to hear, have you learnt it all?
There is grace to embody,
peace to seek and to share;
your being to turn towards Holy One,
showing others the Way.
Do not say ‘I am too far away’ …
Listen to the stories and honour the humanity
of those at a distance
of difference – seek to understand
of geography – we are more connected than we think
of experience – violence reaches in ripples far from its centre
and touches us all, and we will not know peace
until all know peace
Stand in solidarity,
raise your voice for justice,
be present with each other through your praying.

I will anoint you, says Holy One
I will call you and send you.
I give you Justice to cry for,
Mercy to offer,
Love to embody,
Creation to inhabit,
A Story to live and to tell.
You do not go alone – for I am with you and I give you each other,
gathered in my name, sent on my Way.
I am only – no. you are enough.
I am too much – no. you are enough.
I anoint you, says Holy One. Go and meet me where you are.
